    Description

    1.8 Three Joint shakuhachi.
21.5 inches long(55cm) tuned in D. Weight 324g. (11.4 oz) Madake bamboo. Three tight fitting lacquered joints. Kinko style utaguchi (inset blowing edge). Jiari (plaster) buildup inside with smooth urushi (laquer). Seven nodes & five large holes (classic). No cracks or repairs, excellent condition. Maker and age unknown. (Late 20th C)
This flute is 20% lighter than the average Shakuhachi and has larger holes. Players who sound is soft will be able to get more volume because of the larger holes, and the light weight is good for players who have had troubles with heavy instruments in the past. Flutes with plaster buildup inside often have a clearer tone and can be altered by the maker to finesse the sound. Old flutes like this of unknown origin offer better quality for the same price since historical pedigree adds to the value/cost but not necessarily the quality of sound. This sweet sounding flute is a step above beginner bamboo flutes which vary in quality and can limit students. The three joints is evidence of the care taken by the maker. This solid type of bamboo becomes honey colored over time. Playable with well balanced sound.
